  1. Well Riverside, California has a Wong Way, which is pretty cool, but I agree it’s not quite as cool as Dio Way. Plus Riverside sucks anyway.

  2. my bedroom has holy diver blvd. which is pretty boss.

  3. I’m pretty sure that this doesn’t quite trump “DIO WAY”, but there is a road in my town named “THE LONG AND WINDING RD”.

(it actually is rather winding, though it could be longer).

  4. ah Cortland, the last town before you hit I81, when driving from Corning (my home town, and birthplace of Duane Eddie) to Syracuse.

  5. You’ll tell us secrets that you’ve learned. Raow!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we’ll make a good goulash baby.
    Dio, time to go!
You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
    Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

  6. PD’Ville: a street named Wong Way is pretty great, but nothing makes it to this site unless it “goes to 11″.

Pigeon Kicker: that totally rocks. Send a picture !!!

Captain Smack: Cool, but naming something after the Beatles has an air of respectability about it…Dio? That town council has BALLS. Especially given that “Dio Way” is a homonym to “D.O.A”, making the street name appropriately creepy !!!

Cleek: So you’ve been to Cortland? Have you driven the “Dio Way”? That’d be cool. BTW: you changed your URL, almost couldn’t find you back for a while there….

Hillman: Funny you should bring up Tenacious D. Somebody was asking me the other day whether I hated the bands that get lampooned here. In fact, I love almost all of these bands (I’ve mentioned before that Sting is the glaring exception…). Tenacious D is kind of the model. It’s clear they love what they parody…

  7. you changed your URL, almost couldn’t find you back for a while there

had some DNS issues with the old one.

been through Cortland many many times. only ever stopped to hit the McD’s, though. i do like the eponymous apple.

  8. No, but The Smashing Pumpkins are from here. I hope they name a road after them.

  9. So? DO you have good sushi? Well? Do you?

    Dio way. Whatever.

  10. Atlanta has Bobby Brown Blvd. near the airport.

  11. Cleek: next time through, find Dio Way and get your picture taken by the sign. A must do !!!

Tenacious S: that’d be cool, but it wouldn’t have the kind of kitschy appeal that makes me REALLY respect a town. Now if they named a street after Peter Cetera…..

  12. Karindira: I live in Madison, Wisconsin, so no…our sushi is shite. But even if it were great, it wouldn’t make up for our lack of hard rockin’ streets. Cortland rules !!!

Beth: Can you buy crack on Bobbie Brown Blvd?

  13. BTW: the reason I went on that whole “I love what I parody” rant in response to Hillman is in case Kevin Cronin visits my site. Kev, if you’re reading this, I don’t wanna sleep, I just want to keep on lovin’ you !!!

  14. I give. My town sucks.

  15. Marilyn Manson and Macy Gray are from my hometown, but I don’t thik they’ll ever have streets named after them. I wish I could claim Dio. He’s an awesome little guy.

  16. Dale: as a long time Torontonian, it pains me to say it, but having a street named after Ed Mirvish just can’t touch having a street named after Ronnie James Dio.

Flan: If you ever meet Ronnie James, promise me you’ll pinch his cheeks and say “you’re an awesome little guy”. I’ll worship you forever.

  17. Oh, that wasn’t Flannery. That was me, Elizabeth. I was typing on Flan’s laptop and didn’t realize I was signed on under her account.

I would certainly pinch Dio’s cheeks, if he’d let me.

  18. Hey Elizabeth !! OK, let’s lay down the ground rules. In order to gain my eternal admiration, you don’t ask permission, you just pinch his cheeks and call him an “awesome little guy”. It’s all about how he reacts….Does he chuckle or does he invoke some satanic curse upon you?

  19. I think his reaction would depend on how much cleavage I show and how closely I stand to him. You wouldn’t believe what chicks can get away with doing that sort of thing; or maybe you would, you are a guy after all.

  20. Ha Ha, true true. Except I can’t relate to Dio’s experience in this regard as he comes roughly chest level to most women, making the mind altering effect of cleavage particularly powerful.

  21. Wait a minutes… Ronnie James Dio isn’t from Cortland, New York. They’re trying to mooch off his good name!

Well, since any shitty town can just name any street after anyone famous they like, I’m going to propose my street be renamed KING DIAMOND BLVD. Sure, King Diamond is from Denmark, but I’m metal and I need to honor the gods.

    *throws up the horns*

  22. Oops.. my mistake. Dio was born in New Hampshire, but GREW UP in Cortland, NY.

I guess I can’t have King Diamond Blvd. after all. Dammit.

  23. That’s some solid sleuthing, peace. There’s conflicting reports on the internet with some claiming RJD was born and raised in Cortland and others saying he was born in Portsmouth, NH and raised in Cortland.

I like to think that the confusion exists because Dio is actually undead and has always existed, haunting teenage boys throughout human history.

  24. God just hearing that name birngs back acid flashbacks! TY for the memories.

  25. Sorry, I made a mistake in my response to devil horns, we at Anandamide accept acid flashbacks as official currency.

  26. I didn’t know there was a controversy surrounding Dio’s place of origin, but it makes sense that there is… all god-like mythological figures are shrouded in mystery.

You’re right… Dio can’t die so he can’t be born. Dio merely IS. He is less a man of flesh and blood than a force of nature. At our best, we have a little Dio in all of us.

  27. Where exactly is “Dio Way” located in Cortland?

I’ve found sources that say that it is located between Central Avenue and East Court Street, but exactly where is it?

  28. Just sail down the main drag, pass Osborne street and it should be the next one. If you get to Gillan way you’ve gone too far.

  29. Thank you!

  30. He wasn’t born in Cortland. He was born in New Hampshire. His family moved to Cortland in the mid-’40s.

  31. Went down Dio way about 5 minutes ago going east on central ave go past the old rubbermaid plant and dio way is the first right saw ronnie in town about a month ago at a local bar.his mom still lives on the street

  32. I’m originally from Cortland and have driven past Dio Way many times in my life. I also personally know RJD’s cousin!

  33. he maybe smallyou hear his voice loud and tall as he stands up and shouts im the man on the silver mountain

  34. HORNS UP DUDE!

  35. ROCK ON!!!! DIO WAY is the only way!

  36. hey douchbag dio was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire

  37. Hey douche bag, learn to spell douche bag.

  38. Damn now I know I have to get to New York just so I can steal me a sign!!!LOL wonder how many have been taken would look cool in my house though!!!

  39. yea, I used to live in Cortland and I have to say that place sucks!! Never in my life have I been to a place with so many rude, std infested, and backstabbing people other than maybe L.A. I don’t care if Alice Cooper, Ozzy, King Diamond, or even Bruce Dickinson was born here! This place is an arm pit and disgrace to human beings. I urge all who read this to either GET OUT, or STAY AWAY! This is for own good.

    • Ronnie James Dio was actually born in Portmouth, NH.

  40. Memphis forgot foot draggers and child molesters anal rapers and Cortland state students

    • What is on this street? Commercial? Residential? Is this the street his school was on? Inquiring minds, my friend!! Thanks. Sharon

  41. I am from Cortland and I live 3 blocks away from Dio Way. It is a small crappy street. There aren’t even any houses on it. It’s more like a drive way with a stop sign.

    • OH,I just asked what was on this street. I didnt see this post………that sux ass. Dio deserves better than that.

  42. yeah well i live on pendleton st in cortland. dio way is about 2 blocks from me and i love showin my friends back home the sign. they never belive me that the town i live in is where dio is from. fuckin awesome

  43. I have been a HUGE FAN of Ronnie’s for over 3/4 of my life..I am 46,if it is anybody’s business. I met Ronnie backstage years ago,and we have been friends ever since. He IS TRULY one of the NICEST, most AWESOME,and humble people you will ever meet, if you are ever lucky enough to have the chance..He is Intelligent as all Hell, and has an almost photographic memory..I passed through Cortland, NY on the way to NYC in December 2006. It took us a couple hours to find Dio Way.We kept driving past the Rubbermaid plant and running into a dead end where there is a rusty old bridge. Finally we found it,got out of the car,and took pictures of each other hanging off the sign and shooting the “Devil Horns”!! Hate to say it, but Cortland really is the pits. What do people do there to keep entertained, except for drink??

  44. What do people do anywhere, except for drink? If you can’t find something here, chances are you can find it in Syracuse or Ithaca.

  45. That is, unless it involves professional sports… gotta go to Buffalo or NYC for that :)

  46. “I have been a HUGE FAN of Ronnie’s for over 3/4 of my life..I am 46,if it is anybody’s business. Dio himself says that the most excitting thing to do in cortland is “Cow tipping” ;D

  47. Like Dio would know what living in Cortland is like since he hasn’t lived here since what the 70’s? He doesn’t contribute one penny to any musical places to teach youngsters how to play, he does nothing for this town. It sucks, but he left his son here to attend school go figure I guess he wanted a sucky son who by the way is now a weatherman for noaa in Binghamton ny and quite the dork. so Much for 4 foot tall men who take the Italian name for god and think they are one!

  48. Sorry, but Dio wasn’t born in Cortland….

  49. \m/ Fcuk Yeah!!! \m/

  50. I’m from the Cortland area and yeah Dio Way is right next to the old rubbermaid building: tiny road, but his parents lived right on the corner. I live in the town 10 minutes south and i guess he used to play at school dances when my dad was in school…talk about a school dance i wouldnt have been pissed off to be at haha, but i guess he wasn’t the legend yet at that time. I actually have a picture somewhere of the Dio Way sign with a rainbow over it…it was amazing, as he used to sing for RAINBOW! =). anyway, yeah cortland gets alot of crappy people here because of the college, but i’ve never been to any city where there were just a bunch of great people…went to school in utica, talk about an armpit-city HAHA. and yeah mostly people just drink here for fun. also, if cortland doesn’t have something, ithaca, syracuse, or bingamton will and those are all well within driving distance. If you’re in cortland, stop by the Hollywood diner. Dave Feinstein (Dio’s cousin according to wiki), played in Elf with Dio, owns the place and I’ve met him a couple times. Supposedly whenever Dio’s in town, he stops by so I try to stop by once in a while to see if by some chance I’ll get lucky….also the food is pretty good for an inexpensive place, so that helps. I guess that’s all I have to say for now, but I just happened accross this site and saw some fellow-fans and wanted to shed a little light on a topic I knew a bit about. Keep on rockin the horns people, but PLEASE, only when applicable. (i saw Paramore try to throw them up(actually screaming for people to put up the rock horns) once at warped tour while i was waiting for an actual band to play and almost died of a heart attack right there on the spot)
